Oprah’s music teacher open own studio

JUKSKEI PARK- Music teacher Frank Sturgess says it’s never too late to pick up an instrument.

His previous coaching and management roles within the Miagi Youth Orchestra and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls music programme have led him to opening an independent studio in Jukskei Park.

Specialising in piano and violin, he is a firm believer in giving everyone a chance to learn about musicianship and music theory, as well as to feel comfortable with their instrument.

Sturgess dispelled the myth of adults taking longer to learn to play an instrument than a child. “People must never discount what a late starter is capable of,” said Sturgess.

He has had adult students who have started at the same time as children which have been “remarkable”.

“There might not be that innate learning capacity, but adults have a greater discipline and willingness to spend more time on practising,” he said.

When asked what he enjoys about teaching, he said every experience is different.

“No two students are the same and [it] never gets boring,” Sturgess said. The individuality of students requires him to adapt and respond in different ways.

He said, “There are many teaching methods out there, but I can’t have a one-size-fits-all lesson.” He would rather familiarise himself with the different personalities and see what works best. “The challenge is in finding their strengths,” said Sturgess.

One of his students, Dainfern College pupil William Chien, enjoys the smooth sound of the violin. He has been playing for three years and has a lot of fun in his lessons. He said Sturgess teaches him well as he corrects him as he goes along, so he will always improve his instrument skills.

Sturgess also undertakes accompaniment work for examinations, competitions, eisteddfods and other performances.
