Constable Sthembiso Mthembu, the investigating officer on the case, explained that on 16 April a 25-year-old suspect went into the Kya Sands scrapyard and intimidated a worker with a knife. The suspect stole aluminium to the value of R2 000 and fled the scene.
Fortunately the suspect was known to the worker, and his whereabouts were pointed out to the Douglasdale Police. The police arrested the suspect in Kya Sands informal settlement and he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police said, “As we know the theft of copper and other metals is creating problems in all policing areas and communities.
“As you can see the Randburg Magistrate’s Court has taken a tough stance against such matters. Let this be a lesson to all individuals that involve themselves in theft of and dealing in metals.”
Station commander of Douglasdale Police, Brigadier Leon Kruger praised Mthembu for his thorough investigation and prompt conviction.
Colonel Devisolachana Naidoo, who is Mthembu’s supervisor said that he is a young constable with a lot of positivity. “Mthembu is really motivated,” she said. “When he gets a docket he’s out to get a conviction. He was also instrumental in the investigation of the Monte murder case.”
