Boot camp to change the world
DIEPSLOOT - Change the World Trust held its second web-designing boot camp for high school pupils at the Wings of Life Centre in Diepsloot.
After the success of their first boot camp in March, Change the World Trust decided to hold another event with a new set of pupils.
The trust runs high-impact educational programmes in underprivileged schools and communities with a strong focus on information technology (IT). Natalie Emery, co-founder and project manager for the Midrand-based trust, explained that the purpose of the IT training was to equip pupils with a real skill that could be used to find employment opportunities.
Pupils of Rebasotho High School in Diepsloot, Diepsloot Combined School and Zitikeni High School in Tembisa participated in the boot camp and some pupils who had participated previously returned to mentor the new cadets. On the day, pupils had four hours to create a three-page website. They were judged on the websites’ functionality, layout and content, design style and originality.
The winner of the web design was Siyabonga Vilakazi of Zitikeni High School. He was awarded a state of the art tablet for his efforts in designing the winning website.
Emery explained that while the boot camp was a fun way of getting students interested in IT, the trust’s training centres in Midrand, Diepsloot, Zandspruit and the Eastern Cape offered accredited courses in IT.
