First SA braille cup competition

JOBURG - The South African National Council for the Blind, in partnership with Blind SA and the South African Braille Authority, announced the first South African Braille Cup Competition for schools for the blind.

The competition is the brainchild of Perkins International in America. Ghana hosted the first such competition in 2012 and South Africa will host the next maiden-cup competition on 16 August. The competition will improve general scholastic performance through perfecting braille literacy and an awareness of the importance of braille among students. It will involve students in three school divisions: grades 6 and 7; 8 and 9; and 10 and 11. Pupils will compete in five categories of braille proficiency, which are reading comprehension, reading fluency, spelling, proofreading and the oral presentation of an essay. Five schools have shown great interest in the competition this year.
