Bikers for Mandela start journey

STEYN CITY - Bikers for Mandela Day departed from Auto and General Park in Fourways on 11 July for their annual journey of doing good around South Africa.

This year is particularly special for the bikers as it is the first Bikers for Mandela Day journey since the passing of Nelson Mandela. Some of the bikers include radio personalities DJ Fresh, Angie Khumalo and Anele Mdoda, and actor, Saint Seseli.

Zelda le Grange, Madiba’s former assistant and patron of the 1st for Women Foundation which facilitates the ride, said this year’s ride would give the bikers a chance to connect to Mandela since his passing while paying tribute to the great man.

“In South Africa, violence against women continues unabated,” said La Grange. “With this in mind we have dedicated our 2014 journey to the survivors of gender-based violence. We want to encourage more women to speak out, to take action, to follow through so that their perpetrators can be brought to book.

Before departing, the bikers first met with Carolyn Steyn, the founder of 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. They then headed for Diepsloot where they will partner with Steyn and non-profit organisation, Afrika Tikkun to distribute the handmade blankets to 67 Diepsloot-based beneficiaries. From Diepsloot, the bikers will head to Vryburg in the Northern West Province and then onto Kimberly and Bloemfontein.
