Raising the roof for cancer survivor
MONTECASINO - Friends and family of childhood-cancer survivor, Reef Carneson held a fundraiser at Parker's Comedy Club in Montecasino called Raising the Roof for Reef.
At just five months old, Reef, now five years old, was diagnosed with high-risk infant acute lymphoblastic leukeamia. Aggressive chemotherapy yielded no results, so at 11 months old Reef received a bone marrow transplant.
During 2011 the Carneson family realised that Reef would not be able to get the intense rehabilitation treatment that he needed in South Africa. The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles agreed to accept Reef as a patient, and in October 2011 the family moved to the USA.
However, this proved to be very costly, especially the price of Reef’s rehabilitation, so friends decided to start raising funds for the family to stay in the States. Raise the Roof for Reef was emceed by Parker’s owner and comedy legend, Joe Parker, and featured a line-up of hilarious up-and-coming comedians.
Reef is currently in remission, so the evening also celebrated his tenacity and will to survive. Guests had a good laugh while also contributing to the worthy cause that is Reef Carneson.
