After care centre to aid community
LANSERIA - The Refilwe Community Project, in Lanseria, has just launched a new after care centre for the community of Joe Slovo informal settlement.
The Ithuteng Community After Care Centre and Recycle Project will provide a place for more than 70 children from Joe Slovo informal settlement in Lanseria to learn about the environment and themselves.
The idea for the after care centre came after the Joe Slovo Community Council communicated their need for structured educational support for the children in the community during the afternoons. Thanks to partners like Discovery, Lego Trust, Rotary Randburg, Heswall UK and Canada, Alexander Proudfoot, Team Ensemble from Nedbank, Acts group at St Michaels, Bosch, Yippy Playground and Hands on Tech, the dream of the after care centre became a reality for Refilwe. The after care centre can accomodate pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 12. Once they have finished their homework, pupils are led in educational or physical activity by Refilwe’s volunteers. The after care programme will also teach pupils about responsibility and the environment as they have to bring in recyclable material every Monday to be part of the programme. In addition the pupils will receive ‘mulas’, Refilwe’s form of currency, for their recyclable material. They can exchange their ‘mulas’ for stationary, personal care items and basic food items.
