Wanted man bust

DIEPSLOOT- A tip-off led the Diepsloot police tracing team to a wanted suspect and the arrest of two men for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Two men, aged 22 and 28, were arrested by Diepsloot police in Daveyton on the evening of 1 September when they were reportedly found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to a report by Diepsloot police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, police had followed a tip-off to Daveyton in search of one of the men, who was wanted for allegedly firing on police officers in August last year.

That incident took place in Diepsloot Extension 7, where the man is said to have robbed a spaza shop, and allegedly fired through a corrugated iron shack in the congested informal settlement. Police were unable to arrest the man at the scene, being forced to give way for the safety of the neighbouring residents, and he escaped.

Both suspects will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, while the younger man will face an additional charge of attempted murder. They are due to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
