Diepsloot school gets Arbour Day aware

DIEPSLOOT - The finalists in Miss Earth 2014, in association with Tsogo Sun and Servest, gave Akani Primary School in Diepsloot a gift that will last a lifetime.

As an Arbour Day initiative the school received 10 trees, along with an educational tutorial on how to plant and care for the trees.

Servest donated the 10 trees, including the tree of the year, the Ironwood, as well as tools and equipment, while the Miss Earth 2014 finalists and current Miss Earth, Ashanti Mbanga, guided and educated the pupils of Akani about biodiversity, food security and tree-planting.

Tsogo Sun is a long-standing supporter of Akani Primary School and Montecasino employees volunteer regularly at the school, so the Arbour Day initiative was also the perfect opportunity for the hotel group to make a surprise donation of a library and television to the school.

“We understand that the attitude towards environmental responsibility among many South Africans can be complicated by challenging social and economic conditions,” Vusi Dlamini, Tsogo Sun’s group HR director, said.

“We [Tsogo Sun] believe that targeting the youth through educational initiatives like our Arbor Day project create greater environmental awareness and ultimately instill a sense of individual accountability in our young people.”

The Miss Earth programme has found a home at Tsogo Sun for the third year running and the finalists are currently staying at the Palazzo Hotel at Montecasino, while being put through their paces in a number of tasks to increase environmental awareness and social responsibility.
