Community volunteers help police station

DOUGLASDALE - The Douglasdale Police Station welcomed 27 new community volunteers who will assist in the client service centre.

Freda Boiles of the Douglasdale Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) explained that the volunteers signed up at the various awareness days held in the different CPF sectors. The aim of having community volunteers at the station is to alleviate the long queues in the client service centre.

Colonel Tinus Swart of Douglasdale Police Station said it was a comforting sight for residents who have experienced a crime to talk to a community member when coming to report a case at the station.

“At the station we have to prioritise criminal cases so that we can start investigations as soon as possible, so if the community volunteers find out who’s opening a criminal case and get them to the front of the queue, this will help the police to do their jobs,” he said.

Advocate Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF said the forum was excited to announce the launch of the intensified community support programme to assist police by placing trained volunteers in the client service centre during peak hours.

“The improvement of client service is critical to community and police relations and has been identified as a priority,” he said.

The CPF is always looking for new members and more volunteers for their community support programme.
