Suspected robber shot dead

DIEPSLOOT - One suspect was shot dead and another arrested after allegedly robbing a spaza shop.

A 28-year-old man, suspected of robbing a Diepsloot business, was arrested on the morning of 16 September, while his alleged accomplice was shot dead after reportedly attempting to fire at police.

According to a report by Diepsloot police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, police received a call reporting a business robbery in Diepsloot Ext 4 earlier on the morning in question. The two men allegedly robbed a spaza shop, fleeing with cash, cigarettes, airtime and the shop owner’s cellphone.

Responding to the call, and with the help of bystanders, police made their way to the suspects’ location. On seeing the police, one suspect allegedly produced a handgun, but a police officer reacted quickly and shot the man fatally in the upper body.

The suspect was later certified dead on the scene. The second suspect dashed into a nearby informal settlement where he was cornered and arrested.

The stolen items, as well as a handgun and ammunition, were recovered, and the surviving suspect will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on charges of business robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
