Taxi drivers bend the rules in Norscot

NORSCOT- Taxi drivers continue to give Fourways residents a headache by driving on the wrong side of the road.

This occurs frequently on Penguin and Leslie roads near Norscot.

A frustrated Fourways resident who wished to remain anonymous, explained how taxis disregarded oncoming traffic in an

attempt to push in the queue.

“We have to wait while taxis veer up the pavements on Penguin Road and some just blatantly stop until they can find a gap to make their way around other traffic,” the resident said.

The resident said the problem mainly occurred during peak hours and could lead to road rage or a serious accident. There needed to be a greater police presence to alleviate the problem.

In response, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transportation said taxi owners needed to be more stricter on their drivers and that better communication channels needed to be developed between taxi owners, taxi drivers and passengers.

The department said commuters were just as much to blame and should not flag down taxis in inconvenient areas. Additionally the department said Metro police needed to be visible, and frequent fines and arrests needed to be made.
