Keep Fourways clean

FOURWAYS - David Foley, chairperson of the Douglasdale Sector 4 Community Policing Forum encouraged Fourways residents to get involved in improving their community.

“Don’t expect anyone to do the things that you would like to see done, start working with your community to improve the area,” Foley said. He said residents should start by removing illegal signage from streetlights, robots and trees. “The ones with a City of Joburg sticker are legal and the rest are illegal,” he said.

“The sooner they get removed the quicker the people putting them up will stop.”

Foley said residents should make an effort to not litter, pick up litter and educate others on not littering. “Make a concerted effort when you go for a walk to take a bag with you to pick up litter,” he said. “If this is done on a daily basis we will keep Fourways pristine.”

Foley also suggested that residents make an effort to remove all litter and debris from the openings of storm water drains on the roads, as this would ensure that the drains did not get blocked during heavy rains. He added that residents should always clean up after their dogs while walking them.

Foley urged residents not to employ the labourers that sat on the side of the road. “You are putting your life at risk as these guys are not traceable to the police,” he said. He suggested that residents should use bulletin boards in shopping centres to find labour instead. “Ask for ID books and ask for written and contactable references from potential job seekers.”

He also mentioned that residents should not give money or food to beggars. “If you do not give them anything, they will leave.” The councillor encouraged residents to adhere to speed limits, especially in residential areas and report reckless driving, especially with regards to taxis.

He urged residents to log service delivery problems with the respective agencies and added that residents should be vigilant at all times and report suspicious behaviour to the police. “Let’s start working together to restore Fourways to its former prestige.”
