Remember, remember, the fifth of November!

FOURWAYS- AS the celebrations of Diwali and Halloween wind down, Barbeque Downs, Kyalami and Sunninghill communities are gearing up for Guy Fawkes on 5 November.

Although the special day is known for its fiery and cheery celebrations, there are some concerns surrounding the safety of animals and children regarding fireworks and bonfires.

Barbeque Downs resident and former chairperson of the Barbeque Downs Community, Candice James stressed that the community needed to be wise when it comes to these celebrations.

“Residents must think about their neighbours and pets. We are all living here together and have the best interest of the community,” she said.

In terms of the city council’s bylaws, no person should use fireworks within 500m of any explosives storage, petrol depot or petrol station, inside any building, at any public place or at any school, old age home or hospital. A fine of R1 500 will be given to any person found violating these laws.

According to Nana Radebe of the Municipality Emergency Management Services, a fine of up to R10 000 will be imposed on those found guilty of contravening the bylaws, as the safety of the public is paramount.

Additionally, lighting or igniting fireworks in any place where animals are present will incur a fine of R1 000.

James stressed that those living in complexes and townhouses needed to inquire with their body corporates about their rules and regulations surrounding fireworks.

Chairperson of the Kyalami Views II complex body, Felicity Raubenheimer said,” No fireworks of any kind may be discharged in or around our complex. Heavy fines are levied if residents do not abide by the conduct rules in this regard. We have a pet-friendly complex and our animals are extremely important to us. As good citizens we should be adhering to the bylaws of the city.”

“The general law stipulates fireworks can only be in use on Guy Fawkes during the hours of 7pm and 10pm. Pets and animals need to sedated or kept inside during these hours,” commented James.
