Warning: potholes

BARBEQUE DOWNS- With the rainy season upon us, many Barbeque Downs and Sunninghill residents are preparing for the headache of potholes that will be plaguing their festive seasons.

A Fourways Review journalist went around the area to find some of the worst potholes that have surfaced due to the heavy thundershowers, as well as large trucks that use some of the smaller roads within the area.

According to chairperson of the Barbeque Downs Community Candice James, the community needs to be aware and warned that some of the smaller roads like Main, Nanyuki and Malindi roads are farm roads that wash away during the heavy rainy season.

She added that large trucks and the influx of road users have added to the problem causing meteor-like potholes to surface.

After years of back and forth tension between the community and the Johannesburg Road Agency concerning the conditions of the road.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers communications officer for the agency confirmed these roads do not fall under the Johannesburg Road Agency jurisdiction, in fact only a portion of Nanyuki Road is due for resurfacing in the new financial year.

It has become apparent according to James that these problematic roads are actually provincial roads and the onus is upon the South African National Roads Agency to handle any upgrades and reconstruction. Peters-Scheepers added to this saying problems regarding these roads need to be taken up with the province now.

James intends to put together a petition to get these roads fixed as soon as possible, “The community needs to come on board with this, they need to use the JRA app and the right avenues to get their complaints out,” said James.

She stated that road users need to be weary, the conditions of these roads will worsen as the storms come. She additionally said that drivers need to be vigilant and drive carefully when driving over potholes.
