Young women dominate in corporate world

CRAIGAVON - The Phakama Women’s Academy Class of 2014 has just graduated.

The academy seeks to provide young women with the skills and confidence to succeed in the professional workplace.

One of the graduates Zaza Williams explained how it felt to graduate. Williams has lived in Craigavon since she was six years old. Now 24, Williams studied a BCom: Marketing and Communications degree at AAA School of advertising.

“The skills that I have developed from Phakama has equipped me for the corporate world,” she said. “I am an ambassador for the initiative as I will spread the word to other aspiring woman that see a brighter future for themselves.”

She revealed that she was an avid social media junkie and relied on various platforms to gain inspiration when she was feeling creative. “A day does not go by without me tweeting or checking out my Instagram. I also enjoy communicating with the people close to me.”

She said the academy was such an inspiring institution that encouraged and liberated women in South Africa. When asked who her female idol was in the industry, she said her current employer Farah Fortune had paved the way for her to grow and excel in the field.

Graduates were selected from three tertiary institutions: the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the AAA School of Advertising, and the Vega School of Brand Leadership.

According to CEO of the VWV Group, Koo Govender, the academy has been impressed at the quality of the intake of students and equally surprised at their expectations and what they hope to achieve in the short-term. “They think big, dream even bigger and have immense vision, and they are already shrewd in the ways of the world,” said Koo.
