A century of happy travels

PAULSHOF - Riverside Manor retirement village's Jackie Saunders celebrated a century of being alive.

The glamorous senior celebrated her birthday at the retirement village in style with her best friends, an opera singer and a variety of delectable cakes.

Saunders lives there with her husband, and although her birthday is actually on 23 November, her friends decided to surprise her a few days earlier with a special birthday tea. Saunders was born in Potchefstroom in the North West in 1914, four months after the start of World War I. During her 20s, Saunders travelled extensively with the South African military during World War II. She lists the most memorable places she travelled to as being Egypt, Berlin, London and Russia.

Linda Venter, estate manager of Riverside Manor, said, “Even at 100 years old, Mrs Saunders is as bright as a button. She still does all her husband’s and her banking and is the best bridge player at Riverside Manor.”
