In November last year, Willem Hazewindus spotted a continuous trickle of water coming from a pavement on Tulbach Road while he was on his morning walk.
On 18 November last year, he reported the leak during the monthly Joburg 10 plus meeting. According to Hazewindus, at the time, a Joburg Water representative said they would attend to the leak immediately. Hazewindus said the same representative contacted him a few days later to say that Joburg Water could not find the leak. The next day, Hazewindus met the representative onsite to point out the exact location of the leak.
“A week later the Joburg Water representative phoned me to confirm that the leak was fixed, but when I went to Tulbach Road to check, nothing had been done,” he said.
Hazewindus informed the representative that the leak had not yet been fixed, and a few days later he was met with the bittersweet sight of a fixed leak but a dug-up pavement full of mud. According to Hazewindus the pavement was left that way for six weeks until residents took it upon themselves to clean up the mess that was left.
“Does Joburg Water consider this to be the work of a world-class African city?” he asked.
“If not, where is the supervision? Don’t the workmen take pride in their work?”
Eleanor Mavimbela, spokesperson for Joburg Water, said the problem on Tulbach Road was resolved and nothing was outstanding on their side.
“Joburg Water does take pride in the services that they deliver to the residents of Joburg,” she said.
“We do our best to adhere to the turnaround times to deliver quality services in the quickest possible time so as to not inconvenience residents.”
