WATCH: Video surfaces of mystery buffalo an hour before her death

CHARTWELL NORTH – A VIDEO has been uploaded on to YouTube showing the mystery buffalo still alive and running down Runnymead Avenue moments before it was found dead on Cedar Road on 6 May.

Chartwell resident and former chairperson of the suburb’s residents’ association, Bruce Warren, notified Fourways Review of the video which his brother, Derek, had created from surveillance footage taken in the early hours of 6 May.

In the video, the buffalo can be seen running up and down the road. The animal is clearly distressed and bewildered.

“I was leaving home at 4.57am on the morning that the buffalo was found dead. I saw this big animal running down Runnymead Avenue, it was charging with its head and its horns down,” stated Warren.

He originally thought it was a bull with extra-big horns which had escaped from a nearby cattle farm and immediately phoned the farmer, who then told him that all of his cattle had been dehorned and none of them had gone missing.

“I followed it as it ran and turned right into Third Road, it was running towards the river,” Warren continued.

It was at that point that he decided to turn around because he did not want to provoke the animal.

“There wasn’t much I could do on my own at 5am. I assumed that it had maybe escaped from the Lion Park and that it was heading back in that direction,” he said.

Warren was shocked and deeply disturbed when he saw the animal dead on the side of the road later that morning while taking his children to school. “It was 100 percent healthy when I had seen it at 5am.”

“[After] discussing the matter with my brother, he checked his CCTV cameras and found footage of the animal hanging around on Runnymead from about 4am,” said Warren.

The footage was compiled into a video which was then loaded on to YouTube:

Exactly how the buffalo found its way back to Cedar Road and the cause of the buffalo’s death, remains a mystery.
