Get to know Miss Earth South Africa finalist
LONEHILL - Fourways resident Jade Axon, who is one of the 18 Miss Earth South Africa finalists, is set to compete for the Miss Earth title in September at Tsogo Sun Hotel in Montecasino.
The Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that empowers young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in the drive to combat the destruction of South Africa’s natural heritage.
“The Miss Earth journey has made me grow from a girl who cared about playing soccer into a woman who cares about protecting our nature,” Axon said.
The former Crawford College Sandton pupil said the reason she entered Miss Earth was because she was taught from a young age to be a philanthropist and the importance of giving back to the community was taught to her by her parents.
According to Axon, the duties that come with being in the Miss Earth competition have made her realise that she enjoys giving back to the community by helping to plant vegetable gardens, trees and raising money for charities in need.
“We, as a nation, need to support our South African farmers instead of supporting imported food.” she expressed.
She has undertaken a big project for the month of August which is called the Miss Earth’s Big 02 Challenge. The challenge will put schools, businesses and organisations to the test to go green, and the challenge seeks to find which institute goes green the fastest. It urges the community to get involved in planting one or as many trees as they like. After planting the trees, those participating can share their new additions on social platforms.
“Miss Earth is an experience and is not all about the crown or the money, but about the trees I have helped plant, materials I have helped recycle and inspiring others to [treat] nature [with respect].”
