Removal of traffic lights in Broadacres causes frustration

BROADACRES - The removal of a traffic light at the intersection of Cedar and Valley roads in Broadacres has created friction between residents and the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Broadacres resident, Ric Snowden wrote to Fourways Review seeking answers. Snowden said they can no longer be subjected to long traffic queues caused by no traffic lights.

He questioned whether motorists could be expected to queue in traffic until April next year at Cedar and Valley roads because of the removal of the traffic lights at this intersection.

Snowden said it was totally unacceptable to leave the intersection unattended to.

“… either they must erect temporary robots in drums or provide pointsmen during daylight hours as was done on the William Nicol upgrade. It is adding 30 minutes to my travel time from Dainfern each day,” he said.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said the traffic lights were removed by contractors who are widening the road in the area.

Peters-Scheepers said the traffic lights will be reinstalled within a period of six months.

“In the interim, the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport have been instructed to install [mechanisms to regulate traffic] at the affected intersections,” said Peter-Scheepers.
