A war against litter

FOURWAYS – Future City Fourways (FCF), a community-funded, registered non-profit company formed to uplift the Fourways area has declared war on littering by challenging the community to think clean.

Douglasdale Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson, Jean Berdou, who is a founding member of FCF said, “FCF wishes to challenge residents to change [their] behaviour that results in littering in the precinct.”

Susan Mottram, director of FCF said, “Realistically, we expect that we would always have a need to retain a cleaning service on William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road, but a lower incidence of littering would mean we could direct public funding donated to FCF to address other pressing problems in the area.”

Mottram added that in terms of the City’s bylaws, it was an offence to litter. “As FCF grows from strength to strength through increased funding from the affected public, so too will its influence on anti-social and anti-environmental behaviour that brings us all down,” she said.

Berdou urged the community to:

  • Stop throwing litter out of vehicles and rather place it in appropriate receptacles.
  • Stop leaving rubbish on pavements and in public areas.
  • Help FCF to help the community by picking up any refuse seen while jogging or walking.
  • Report all dumping, littering and other environmental violations by taking photos and details of the violation and reporting it to the city council, and also copy in the FCF so that they can monitor action.

“We all want a cleaner and safer environment and can have this if we all work together as a community. We challenge everyone to work with us in 2016 to make the greater Fourways precinct even better,” Berdou said.

FCF collected about 2 400 bags of rubbish during the first two months of its publicly-funded street cleaning and area maintenance programme.

The company will work with the Douglasdale CPF and Metro police to look into ways of discouraging pollution and encouraging environmental stewardship in the area. Anyone with workable solutions is welcome to contact FCF.
