Preventing crime through communication

NORSCOT – According to Penny Steyn, founder and co-ordinator of Making a Difference (Mad) Domestic Watch, despite being the eyes and ears of the community, domestic workers and gardeners are overlooked when it comes to safety issues, which is a big mistake.

Steyn explained that it was vital that homeowners educated their staff about criminals and their behaviour, as criminals often use vulnerable people earning low wages to get information.

She encouraged homeowners to provide their staff with the knowledge to keep themselves safe, and also urged them to have an good relationship with their staff.

“Foster an open relationship with your domestic worker and gardener,” said Steyn at a recent Mad meeting held in the Norscot Manor Recreation Centre.

The meeting was the first of many to teach domestic workers, gardeners and homeowners how to prevent crime.

Each attendee at the meeting received a written lesson.

The lessons are held at the centre, 168 Penguin Drive, Fourways, on the second last Thursday of every month at 9:30am.
