Two killed in airplane crash

LANSERIA - Two occupants have died after the airplane they were travelling in crashed about 8km from Lanseria Airport just after 4.30pm on 7 March.

EMER-G-MED spokesperson Max Cohen said paramedics rushed to the scene and found that the two occupants, reported to be a man and a woman, had succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on the scene.

Cohen said it was reported by witnesses that the plane had taken off from the airport when it called in a mayday.

“The exact cause of the crash is unknown and is under investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority as well as the South African Police Services,” said Cohen.

It is reported that due to the crash, traffic is slow on the R512 near Lesedi Village.

The incident follows a crash which took place on 18 July 2013 when a man and woman were killed after the light aircraft they were travelling in crashed in a field outside Lanseria. On 3 February 2014, three people on-board KingAir 90 were killed after the aircraft crashed during its descent at Lanseria Airport.
