Douglasdale celebrates water week

DOUGLASDALE – In celebration of Water Week 2016, Greenbeings, a non-profit organisation which focuses on environmental education and sustainability projects, hosted a river rehab at the Klein Jukskei Spruit.

In attendance were community members and representatives from business, forums and various organisations.

Alex Frost of Greenbeings said, “This is one of our two projects that we run with the first one being Green Schools, which is based in Cosmo City and aims to get the local community to take ownership of the river.”

Frost explained that the main objective of the day was to improve the ecosystem by planting indigenous trees and removing all invasive alien plant species along the river bank.

Now in its fourth year, the river rehab has seen 60 indigenous trees planted in the area.

Also lending their hand to the cause, pupils from Bryanston High School and Kingsmead College did their part by collecting rubbish along the river bank.

Frost thanked the community for their involvement and continuous support.
