The re-energised Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s K9 Narcotics Tactical Unit (NTU) was re-established on 21 November. The tactical unit has been raking in successes since, and a whopping 38 arrests have been made in just four days.
These are the arrests that have been made:
- 18 arrested for dealing in or possession of illicit substances
- 20 arrested for cases relating to hijacking, robberies, assault, unlicensed firearms, fraud and possession of stolen goods
- seven hijacked or stolen vehicles recovered
- five unlicensed firearms recovered
- large amounts of cash, watches and electronics were seized and recovered.
The suspects were handed over to the South African Police Service, and the Department of Public Safety will follow up on the cases reported.
“I am highly impressed at the speed and success that K9 NTU is achieving. The unit is taking an unprecedented victory and the city of Johannesburg is now finally gaining an upper hand in this war against crime,” said Michael Sun Member of Memorial Committee (MMC) for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg.
Drugs worth an estimated R100 000 was seized. Sun went on to say that some of the successful busts were a direct result of community involvement and added that the residents of Johannesburg should be proud of this momentous victory.
“Whilst we celebrate this early success, we must not be fooled to believe that this is over, there is still much work to be done,” said Sun.
“The community must keep joining in the fight against drugs and crime.”
