WATCH: Lonehill community hits the water!

LONEHILL – Western Cubs Rugby Club and the Lonehill Residents Association clean up Lonehill Dam.

If you know anything about nature and environmental conservation, then you probably know the detrimental effects alien plants have on the ecosystem.

In order to avert imminent threats to the local ecosystem, the Western Cubs Rugby Club, in conjunction with the Lonehill Residents Association, removed invasive Kariba weed from the Lonehill Dam.

The dam cleanup is part of the rugby club’s social responsibility initiative as well as an effort to raise funds for their upcoming rugby tour to Spain and Italy in December.

The boys cleared just under three tons of the invasive weed!

“It was such a festive day and that was a lot of Kariba weed removed by the boys – absolutely fantastic,” said the residents’ association.

The association also plans on adopting all public parks, bridle paths and the river frontage to effectively manage the areas to the benefit of the community and the environment.

They have been working with a number of specialists on a long-term, sustainable solution to the problems facing the Lonehill Dam as well as the section upstream from the dam.

The park adoption is expected to give the Envirofund team the leeway to implement strategies that will resolve problems without delays from municipal departments. “This adoption would allow the team to address issues such as erosion and invasive species and allow us to make other improvements to the ecosystem,” the association said.
