St Peter’s College play their part to improve literacy

Sunninghill – St Peter's College continues their bid to improve literacy skills in Grade 1, 2 and 3 learners.

St Peter’s College, based in Sunninghill, partnered with Reading for Africa many years ago in a bid to play their part in promoting literacy skills in Grade 1, 2 and 3 children.

With eight out of 10 learners in

Grade 4 facing reading challenges, the school saw this as an opportunity to grow leaders within their society and uplift the community for a better future.

In order to enhance skills, and add a meaningful impact to the learners, St Peters Prep collaborated with the Sefikeng Primary School junior phase, providing weekly classes to Grade 0 learners to concentrate on gross motor and spoken English skills.

Furthermore, St Peter’s offers their intern teachers and staff as a fundamental support for the programme. A Read for Africa technique provided by the school is therefore followed by the teachers for lesson preparation at Grade 2 and 3 levels.

The curriculum also helps the intern teachers become reading specialists and use this skill throughout their teaching careers. The initiative reaches out to St Peter’s learners providing them with an opportunity to interact with learners of Sefikeng through outings, combined sports activities and other community service activities.

Part of the activities is an implemented training schedule by St Peter’s offering advice and assistance to the staff at Sefikeng which has proven to be of great value. The combined vision between the two schools is to teach children the spirit of giving back to the community.
