Dog poisoning shifts to Sunninghill

SUNNINGHILL – A dog in Sunninghill dies of poisoning as the nationwide problem gets worse.

The Sunninghill Community Ratepayers recently reported a sad incident of a dog which died after it was poisoned on 9 June.

According to the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station Captain Granville Meyer, the incident wasn’t reported at the station. “We haven’t heard of something like this and the matter wasn’t reported to our station but I’d advise residents to report such incidents in the future.”

According to SPCA Sandton inspectorate manager Steven Maila. the poisoning of dogs is currently a serious problem in the country.

“Animal poisoning in South Africa is an ongoing, serious and punishable animal welfare concern whether done intentionally or not,” he said.

“The substance used for poisoning animals causes suffering and it’s the cruelest, inhumane way to kill an animal. Aldicarb [Two Step] is the most common substance used to poison dogs.

“Criminals usually use this illegal poison to maliciously kill dogs before committing another crime such as housebreakings and vehicle theft. Sometimes wild animals fall victims as a result of poison placed as bait.”

Maila provided guidelines for residents:

• All poisoning cases must be reported to local police stations with a request for them to investigate the case and remove any suspected poison bait/substance from the property

• Report the incidents to relevant or local SPCAs who shall also investigate and liaise with the police

• A poisoning incident is a crime and should always be treated as such

• The incidents must be reported to local community groups to make homeowners aware. Those who

have dogs need to make plans by keeping their loving pets inside the house at night or away from the front yard where they could potentially be poisoned.
