Provincial Department of Road and Transport to appoint new contractor to finish R511 road construction project
FOURWAYS– Nkonki said the department was at an advance stage of procurement process to appoint new company to finish the work.
The Department of Road and Transport in the province said a procurement process to appoint a new contractor to finish the R511 road construction project is at an advanced stage.
This project has been in the works for years and is meant to connect the Fourways and Diepsloot Township communities. The Fourways Review reported about the halt to construction to the road in Vadi addresses R511 concerns [Published online 30 May 2018].
Spokesperson Theo Nkonki said the department had decided to terminate the contract and part ways with the previous contractor.
“The department had a long court battle with the previous contractor after their contract was terminated due to poor performance and failure to deliver as expected. This court issue has led to unnecessary delays to the construction project of R511 which is used by thousands of people daily.
“The procurement process to appoint a new contractor to continue with the project is at an advanced stage and the new contractor is expected to resume the work early next year.”
He added that the Covid-19 pandemic early this year also impacted the procurement processes. “We hope that the process to appoint a new contractor will be done with before the end of this year so that come next year, the project resumes.
“We hope that the new contractor will finish the project in time.”
