Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has launched a preliminary investigation after allegations of abuse and harassment surfaced on social media.
Video footage posted to social media on 20 June showed an altercation between a street vendor and Metro police officers in Robyn Park.
The video instantly went viral, gaining the attention of Metro police and City of Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo.
According to Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the street vendor’s operation was previously brought to the attention of the department’s management.
Fihla added that in addition, the complainant (street vendor) alleged that the officers tried to solicit a bribe for selling goods on the side of the road without the necessary permission to do so.
“The matter has been brought forward to the JMPD Internal Affairs Unit and a preliminary investigation has been initiated,” said Fihla.
In the meantime, a number of community members have rallied behind the street vendor. Many have already donated funds to contribute towards the street vendor’s permit.
Members of the community who have been unfairly treated by a Metro police officer can call the 24/7 anti-corruption hotline on 0800 203 712.
