Civic organisation concerned with fuel price hike and Eskom’s Stage 6 load-shedding

Sanco chairperson said Eskom’s management has robbed South African citizens of their basic right to have access to electricity.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Zone 14 has called for the chief executive officer at Eskom André de Ruyter to step down from his position at the power utility.

This was after the power utility recently introduced Stage 6 load-shedding following an unprotected worker strike at the utility which ended on July 5.

Sanco chairperson in Zone 14 Peter Lekalakala said the civic organisation was perturbed by what he described as ‘punishment of people by Eskom’.

He said Eskom’s management has robbed South African citizens of their basic right to have access to electricity.

“Sanco in Zone 14 and Greater Johannesburg Region feel disturbed by the punishment of our people by Eskom through its decision to switch the lights for almost 12 hours a day. We call for De Ruyter to be axed and be replaced by a competent administrator because he has failed our country.”

He said the decision of the power utility has caused irreparable damage to the struggling economy.

“Businesses are suffering because of Eskom management’s incompetence and workers will be the first to suffer because of retrenchments. We cannot afford to see another jobs bloodbath because of incompetent individuals.”

Lekalakala also lashed out at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration’s failure to find solutions to high fuel prices.

“Fuel prices have been escalating non-stop ever since this administration took over in 2018. South Africans are now faced with high food prices that are genuinely brought about by this uncaring administration.”
