Fuel price hike forces local taxi associations to increase taxi fares

Taxi associations operating in Fourways said they were left with no choice following the recent fuel price increases.

Local taxi associations operating in and around Fourways said commuters must brace themselves for taxi fare price increases from August.

This was after the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced a fuel price increase early this month which saw motorists paying more for a litre of petrol and diesel.

The department pointed to EU discussions regarding imposing sanctions on crude oil and petroleum products from Russia as one of the main contributing factors to fuel increases.

Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) and Randburg United Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (Rulldta) said they were in the process of finalising talks on price increases on routes that they shared.

ATA spokesperson Mxolisi Ximba said, “Some of our routes where we operate alone have already given notice to our customers regarding our decision to increase fares in August. We are currently in talks with other associations operating on routes where we also operate. Some routes have raised their fares by R3 and others by R5.”

Rulldta spokesperson Thami Mabaso said, “Fuel prices left us with no choice but to increase our prices on different routes including Diepsloot to Fourways. We are meeting our counterparts from other associations to agree on prices. Our customers will know before August how much they will pay on different routes.”
