Curro Chartwell commemorated Nelson Mandela Day by collecting glass jars filled with nutritious easy-to-cook ingredients on July 15.
The school managed to collect more than 800 Jars of Hope bottles. This was the first time the school had organised an outreach initiative such as this and the idea was initiated by Wendy Hanlon, a teacher and chairperson of the diversity committee at Curro Chartwell.

“I suggested to everyone ‘how do you feel about Jars of Hope?’ because it literally is a jar of hope and it’s going to fill someone’s tummy,” she said.
The learners got involved in the process of collecting and filling the jars with a cup of rice and lentils, soup mix and a stock cube that can feed a family of four. They also managed to get donations of blankets.

Hanlon said the jars and blankets would be donated to several NPOs in different communities.
She added members of the Douglasdale CPF Sector 1 also played a big role in the collection of jars, and donated 250 filled jars to the school as part of their Mandela Day initiative.

Hanlon said the support that she had received from the community had been overwhelming and expressed her gratitude to everyone that was involved. “It is just an amazing thing and I would like to carry on with this for the rest of the year, and in my community too.”
