Lonehill Preparatory learners win big in first-ever primary schools e-sports tournament

E-sports is on the rise at Crawford Lonehill International Preparatory following their victory at a local primary schools e-sports tournament.

Four learners from Crawford International and Lonehill Preparatory were recently crowned e-sports champions after dismantling the 15 other schools in the tournament.

Under the guidance of IT teacher Nathi Khoza, learners Bhavik Naidoo, Shyin Panday, Sean Hutcheson and Obakeng Motloba made their school proud by being crowned in the first-ever Comic Con KidsCon e-sports primary schools’ tournament in Minecraft gaming.

The school has a number of learners who take part in e-sports gaming outside of the school walls, but the school has not offered any programme until recently.
Khoza said his learners taking part in the tournament was the perfect start in getting into the league for primary school teams. “The tournament was hosted by RGB Gaming who are starting an official e-sports gaming league for primary schools. Part of that introduction was to invite schools to participate in this tournament,” he said.
“Having learners take part in e-gaming from home actually put us in good stead because we were able to put a team together and send them through, so we’re going to start that journey officially as an offering to our learners.”

Participants in the tournament had a number of tasks to complete in the Minecraft game, including a capture the flag section and the completion of a parkour course.
When it comes to the beginning of their interest in Minecraft and e-sports, the learners have a similar experience in getting started. Each of them was introduced by their family members and it has been history ever since.

“I first started liking e-sports and gaming when I went to my cousin’s house, and he was playing Minecraft. In the game, they were doing really fun stuff, so I went to my dad one day and asked to get the game,” said learner Shyin.
“At the time, it was on mobile. I then started Minecraft and gaming videos, and that’s how I found my love for gaming. I eventually got a PS4 with Minecraft being my first game. I then downloaded other games like Fortnite and stuff.”

Aside from bragging rights and a trophy, the boys also won merchandise and gaming equipment.
Khoza concluded that there will be trials for a team to defend the school’s new title at next year’s tournament.
