Learner hopes to inspire his peers to do cycling and raise funds for his school

Dean recently participated in a 35 kilometre Ride Joburg 94.7 Cycle Challenge and finished the race in hours.

A 16-year-old learner at Edustreams Vocational High School for learners with special learning needs, Dean Carstensen, has challenged his peers to consider cycling as a sport in order to keep themselves fit and healthy.
Dean is a phenomenal example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination.

He recently participated in a 35km Ride Joburg 947 Cycle Challenge and finished the race in two hours. He said participating in the race helped him understand the importance of not giving up even when you feel like it.

“I started riding a bike when I was two years old. When I was 11 years old, I started doing serious cycling going to the road and mountains. I did fitness my training in the gym, and I cycled three to four times a week when to prepare for the race.”

“I have previously participated in The Steyn City and Waterfall races but this one was extremely exhausting, but it was rewarding to finish and achieve my goal of completing it.”

He said cycling alongside experienced cyclists helped him learn a number of things including discipline. “I would love to encourage and motivate my peers to participate and enjoy the experience with me. Stephanie and Keegan in my school also cycle.

“I learned the importance of not giving up no matter how hard it is. You keep pushing yourself beyond the limits and always push to complete and achieve your goals. I would love to participate in the Big 947 race and the Karoo to Coast race.”

He added, “I also want to participate in charity events to raise funds for our school and also raise funds for cancer survivors and other causes.”
