The South African Men’s Basketball team brought home a bronze medal from the recent Region Five Youth Games in Malawi.
A local teenager who took part in a recent basketball competition was selected for the South African Basketball team that participated in youth games in Malawi.
Fourways resident Yanda Peter (15) was selected for the South African Men’s Basketball squad as part of Team SA. The games are bi-annual multi-code games for U20 youth in the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region including South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, and Eswatini.
Yanda has been playing basketball since the age of 11 and has been part of Sandton Bullz Basketball based in Bryanston. Last year, the club won the Junior NBA tournament for Johannesburg and the overall Gauteng region.
The accolades don’t stop there for the young player as he was also part of the St John’s College U15 basketball team that won the St David’s College Inanda Hoops basketball tournament in the U15 category.
Yanda was named to the tournament all-star team that won the Johannesburg Basketball League U16 tournament where he was named the most valuable player.
