Curiosity brought one road works worker to assist in fixing the city’s roads
Women power is strong for Pothole Patrol inspector, Noma Nkabinde as she strives to break the barriers of women in male-dominant fields.
One construction worker’s interest in the field has led to assisting the community in repairing our roads.
Noma Nkabinde (33) is an inspector for Pothole Patrol who works to repair potholes on Johannesburg’s local roads. They work alongside Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) in filling potholes reported.
Since being part of the organisation, Nkabinde said she has enjoyed the space and environment she is in. “The roadwork journey at Pothole Patrol has been amazing and we have been successfully growing each day.
“I got into this department because I like to be unique. I like trying out new things and I love exploring. I was curious about roadwork construction. That’s when I decided to apply at the company. As a driver, I know how bad the roads can be, so I wanted to be a hero.”
Nkabinde said she wants to play her part in showing people that roadwork is not just a man’s job.
“Never judge a book by its cover. One of my favourite Bible quotes is, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’. This verse is just a reminder that anything is possible.
“To all the women out there who still think they can’t do this, please flush that mentality because anything is possible. I am a good example, doing a ‘man’s job’. We are all about saving lives and cars. The future is feminine.”
Nkabinde has plans to grow herself in the construction field. “In the next five years, I would like to see myself grow to my full potential within the company. I don’t plan on going anywhere because I love my job.
“We as women need to keep showing up and reminding others that it is possible.”
