Four Dainfern College learners compete in storms

Dainfern College learners did not let rain and wind stop them from reaching the finish line.

Bad weather did not stop four Dainfern College students from competing in the Amashova Classic Cycle Race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on October 22. Lillia Geyer (Grade 11), Claire Fisher (Grade 11), Mikayla Ernst (Grade 10) and Julian Ernst (Grade 9), put on their best performance regardless of the windy and wet conditions.

The Amashova started at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finished on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, outside the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium. Lillia Geyer placed second in U19 girls in the 106km classic while Claire Fisher placed third in the U19 girls in the 106km classic. Mikayla Ernst placed fifth in the U17 girls for the 65km race while Julian Ernst placed 8th in the U17 boys’ category for the 65km race.

According to Michelle Fisher, a mom and supporter of the youngsters, they were very hesitant to let them start the race. “There was so much thunder and rain, but they were so keen after so much training. Parents met them halfway to check on their progress and they all smiled through the rain and wind, saying they came to finish.” Fisher further elaborated that she saw other cyclists give up before starting because of weather conditions. ” The training and a large dose of grit and determination paid off. The learners said they didn’t come out here so they can go back without finishing this race.”
