Villagers get quizzical during quiz night

The Douglasdale Retirement Home arranged a quiz night for its residents to test their knowledge.

Do you know that a group of pandas is called an ’embarrassment’, our national fish is called ‘galjoen’, and turkeys originated in Mexico?

These are some of the questions that residents from Douglasdale Retirement Village needed to answer as they tested their knowledge and were crowned winners of the popular quiz night in the village.

The questions were compiled by quiz master extraordinaire Peter Gilbert.

When asked how he came up with the 80 questions, some of which were obscure, Gilbert claims to be quite an expert. The ladies teased him for asking too many sports questions, which most of the gentlemen had fun answering.

“But I was very impressed by the team’s enthusiasm and sometimes their answers. I started by trawling the internet, checked out old encyclopedias, and was always on the lookout to find what I am looking for in the most unexpected places.”

The rules were loud and clear, “They had only 60 seconds to answer each question, and no mobile phones allowed – you could say it was a bit of a challenge.”

The winning team did not go home empty-handed but received a R1 000 cash prize and a recognised winner’s title.

Barbara ‘Barb’ Holcroft believed that knowledge is power and emphasised the importance of community and interaction within the village. She also praised their incredible social committee for organising a great evening’s entertainment for the residents, saying ‘hats off’ to them.

“We had great pub food, the happy sound of glasses clinking, and lots of laughter; everyone agreed it was a very enjoyable social evening.”

The captain of the winner’s circle, John MacCallum, and his deputy, Lee Wrogemann, found the question ‘Do you know what a Googol is?’ to be tough.

“But I enjoyed the team’s commitment and the competitive spirit shown by all the teams. There was certainly a lot of banter going on and funny interaction between everyone. Plenty of loud ‘groans’, when the correct answers were announced,” said MacCallum.
