Unity College hosts inter-house gala

Learners of unity swam and fought to get across the pool.

Unity College held their inter-house gala on March 2 where learners showcased their water skills. According to the school’s senior admin officer, Michelle Kirk, the learners enjoyed themselves and the event was a lot of fun for pupils, parents and the staff. “Everyone cheered on the learners irrespective of how long it took to get across the pool. They enjoyed the pool so much they did not want to get out of the water,” said Kirk.

She said the learners showed each other so much kindness and that stood out. “The way they encouraged their friends, especially the ones who are struggling to finish, was very heart-warming. On an ordinary school day, the older pupils always look after the younger ones especially if they are in distress or need to be led to their classrooms and this spirit of caring was visible in the water too. They helped everyone get across the pool and it was heart-warming to witness,” said Kirk.

So many parents and extended family members attended to support their children in the sport. “The way they cheered on their pupils meant a lot to us. The pupils love being supported and gestures like these show them the kind of support that we need them to see. They love the recognition as much as we do.”
The principal of the school Jeanine Kerr said,” Unity sports events are about being together as parents, pupils and staff. It is about celebrating the participation of every pupil no matter what their ability. There is no first and second, there is the enjoyment of participation and the encouragement of friends and family.”

She said the school aims to build confidence and social awareness at these kinds of events. “Most of all, it is about fun for everyone. The Unity family who put together the event, the families who cheer their children on and most importantly the swimmers, beaming with happiness and pride as they enjoy each event and receive their medals at the end of the gala are all what is important to us.”
