Promote cleanliness within taxi ranks

The city taxi association aims to promote cleanliness within local ranks, starting with drivers wearing formal outfits on Mondays.

Many taxi drivers in the city have embarked on a unique initiative to promote cleanliness and professionalism within their ranks. Every Monday, drivers wear formal outfits as they hit the streets, setting a new standard of elegance and hygiene within the taxi ranks.

Wele Nxumalo, rank manager and a spokesperson for the Alexandra Taxi Association said, “The idea behind formal Mondays originated from a desire to fight the negative perception often associated with taxi ranks and drivers, which are sometimes viewed as chaotic or untidy.

“The Alexandra Tax Association wishes to change the public perception and elevate the image of the taxi industry. This day is not only about dressing sharp but also about promoting pride and respect for the taxi profession and the community we serve,” he explained.

By wearing suits, ties, and polished shoes, these drivers are challenging stereotypes and demonstrating their commitment to excellence.

One of the drivers commented on what the day means to them. “For us drivers, formal Mondays are a reminder of the importance of cleanliness, both in our personal and professional spaces. We dress formally not only to show respect for our passengers but also for our work and workplace,’’ Said Misani Nkala.

Some passengers have even reported feeling more comfortable and secure when riding taxis on formal Mondays, appreciating the elevated level of service and attention to detail. Nkosingiphile Masuku, a community member and passenger commented, “ I wish taxi drivers could wear formal and smart every day, this is nice to witness. I have always known taxi drivers to be careless but seeing them looking smart every Monday, makes me proud and feel safe walking around the rank.”

The Alexandra Taxi Association is planning to expand the initiative to other days of the week and encourage more drivers to participate.
