“They have selflessly responded to dozens of fires this year alone. Since February, they have responded to fires in our area at least once a week and sometimes up to five fires a weekend.

“These are a small group of volunteers who have prevented fires from consuming homes and protected horses and wildlife, responding to both house and veld fires,” said Kristin Kallesen, speaking on behalf of the Gekco committee.

On October 29, the committee hosted a pizza and beer gathering at Fangio’s for the fire team as a thoughtful gesture to honour the amazing work that they do for the community. Kallesen said this was also a special occasion for them to raise funds for some fireproof pants to improve their safety gear.

“It is the first time we have honoured the firefighting team. We have had a very bad season because of the drought this year and the fires have been worse and more frequent as a result.”

Gekco has been instrumental in ensuring the environment is protected for the community’s benefit since its establishment.
