70-year-old Fourways runner completes Soweto Marathon in impressive time

Drawing inspiration from family, and fueled by crowd support, Greg King proves that age is just a number, already setting his sights on his next challenge.

With a lifetime of running experience, Greg King, from Fourways, continues to prove that age is just a number as he secured a podium finish in the great grand master category with a time of 01:06:23 at the 2024 Soweto Marathon.

King’s running legacy began with his first Soweto Marathon in 2014, where he completed the half-marathon (21.1km) alongside his twin daughters. Since turning 70, he has discovered a new competitive edge, thriving in his age group.

To prepare for the event, King said he maintained consistent training throughout the year, ramping up his mileage and intensity in the four weeks leading up to the marathon.

“I made a point of pushing hard on the uphills. It’s essential to have a strong foundation, and I’ve learned to listen to my body over the years.”

He said the Soweto Marathon’s energetic crowd support played a significant role in his performance.

“The community comes out in full force, shouting, whistling, and ululating. It’s inspiring.”

He said listening to the affectionate chants of ‘Go oupa, go!’ from spectators, which translates to: Go grandfather, go, fueled his running determination.

“Hearing those chants gives you an extra boost of energy. It’s incredible.”

King describes the 10km course as ‘very fair’, with a gentle downhill start allowing runners to build momentum. However, the long, steady climb over the N1 highway requires mental toughness.

As a seasoned great grand master, King encourages fellow runners to embrace the privilege of competing alongside younger athletes.

He said this is because they inspire them to keep going.

“We’re not just running for ourselves, we’re running for our families, our communities, and our own well-being.”

With a new grandchild on the way, King said his family also plays a huge role in motivating him to do what he does best. He has already set his sights on the 2025 Two Oceans half marathon, which he hopes to run with his daughter Jessica.

“Running with family makes it even more special,” he said.
