Local MMA fighter reflects on growth after EFC120 setback
After a tough loss at EFC120, Thokoza's Christopher Matukane vows to elevate his wrestling game with new training partnerships, setting his sights on a return to glory in 2025.
It was a bittersweet evening for local fighter Christopher Matukane during his fight against newcomer Jason Van der Merwe at the World Sports Betting Arena for EFC120.

The East Rand native acknowledged the areas where he fell short during the match, particularly his wrestling, which he described as: ‘not great’. Matukane, known for his striking prowess, has recognised this gap in his skill set and has resolved to tackle it head-on in the coming months.

“I vow to master my wrestling by the end of 2025,” said Matukane.
Adding a boost to his training regimen, Matukane revealed that fellow heavyweight fighter Terrence Born has recently joined his gym. Born’s experience and skill set are expected to play a significant role in elevating Matukane’s game, thereby enhancing his chances of success in future competitions.
“Having someone like Terrence around will help a lot. We push each other to be better,” Matukane explained, a glimmer of hope illuminating his otherwise sombre reflection post-fight.
EFC120 showcased a night filled with thrilling matchups that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Among the highlights, Sibusiso Sovendle delivered a masterclass performance, defeating Ntando Zondi in what was hailed as an exhilarating contest.

Meanwhile, Zaakir Badat successfully defended his title against Luke Michael, solidifying his dominance in the EFC.
