Taxi Association lambasts traffic officials for ‘unfair’ roadblocks
Taxi passengers arrive late at work and home as roadblocks during peak hours spark frustration in Fourways.
The Alexandra Taxi Association Fourways Committee spokesperson, Mbuzeni Maxwell Mhlongo, has raised concerns over roadblocks during peak hours.
Mhlongo claims that taxis are being unfairly targeted in Fourways while other vehicles are allowed to pass, leading to heavy traffic and delays for passengers.
Mhlongo said these roadblocks are causing commuters to arrive late for work in the mornings and return home late in the evenings, with many passengers complaining about the daily disruptions.

“Our taxis are stopped and inspected during rush hour, while others pass freely. This is making life difficult for our passengers and drivers.”
Mhlongo said the association is not against law enforcement but wants transparency on why taxis appear to be singled out during morning and afternoon rush hours, compounding traffic congestion and punishing commuters who rely on taxis for their livelihoods.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla responded, “The JMPD does not usually conduct roadblocks during peak hours, instead focusing on easing congestion during these times.
“It is more likely that the roadblocks you’re referring to are being conducted by the Gauteng Traffic Police or the National Traffic Police. While I can’t speak to their operations directly, stops are conducted to ensure vehicle roadworthiness and legal compliance,” Fihla said.
Fourways Review has also reached out to Gauteng Traffic Police for comment. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
