Illegal dumping in Chartwell sparks resident outcry

Chartwell resident calls for action as rubble and trash pile up on local roads.

Chartwell resident Rosalee Nel has voiced frustration over ongoing illegal dumping in the area, saying it is spoiling the environment and making it unpleasant for residents to enjoy simple outdoor activities. “We can’t even take runs to enjoy the area because of the dirty filth lining the roads. Dumping here is an everyday occurrence. It’s not just unsightly; it’s unhygienic.”

Nel said she has repeatedly reported the problem to ward councillor Rufas Maswazi and the city, but has not received any communication in response.

Nel said a new dumping site is developing by Watercombe Road. “A lot of it has to do with the composting place, which might be closed when people want to offload. So, instead, they dump rubble and trash along the route. This has been going on for far too long.”

The resident is calling for, at least, a clear: ‘No Dumping’ sign in the area, to deter offenders, and for more active enforcement to hold illegal dumpers accountable.

Fourways Review reached out to Maswazi. He commented on the issue, saying: “I have escalated this matter to the service delivery group. The response from Pikitup is still not forthcoming.”
He also encouraged residents to report illegal dumping to Pikitup at 011 688 1500 or email: illegaldumping@pikitup.co.za.
