A mother’s journey beside a young equestrian

For Cathy Davies, being a rider’s mom means long hours, careful planning, and moments of both fear and pride.

For many, a pony ride is a fleeting childhood memory. For Sarah Davies, it was the start of a lifelong passion. At just 18 months old, she climbed onto a pony for the first time, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Her mom, Cathy Davies, remembers that moment fondly.

“At that stage, we thought it was adorable, but we had no idea how it would become her passion and such a huge part of our lives.”

Over the years, Cathy has watched Sarah blossom, both in and out of the arena.

“The most rewarding part has been watching her grow as a person, through all the challenges and fun moments, and being able to be part of it with her.”

Being a parent to a rider isn’t without its challenges. Cathy admits the sport is time-consuming and sometimes nerve-wracking.

“It requires many hours on the side of an arena, and it can be scary to watch, whether it’s practice or competition, because it comes with a lot of risk.”

Balancing schedules has been another hurdle, but Cathy and her husband have learned to make it work.

“It requires a whole lot of planning and organising lifts, but luckily, we both have flexibility in our careers, so we’ve shared the load.”

The sport, however, has given Sarah invaluable life lessons.

“She has learnt to persevere, even when it’s difficult and overwhelming, to trust the process, to work hard, and get her hands dirty. She’s also learnt to handle both losses and victories with kindness.”

She also has advice for other parents stepping into this world: “Find a supportive coach and yard family who are committed to your child and their journey. Be prepared for a lot of dust and dirty shoes, and enjoy the ride.”

The Davies family has found support at Cavaliere Equine Centre, under the guidance of coach Claudia Graunke.

With such dedication behind her, Sarah’s journey in the saddle is not only her own; it’s a family story of passion, patience, and perseverance.
