Part on the way as Johannesburg Water starts fix on valve leak in Craigavon

After months of frustration, road damage, and safety hazards, Johannesburg Water has started with repairs of the leaking valve at Poplar and Campbell roads in Craigavon.

Craigavon residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as Johannesburg Water (JW) begins repairing the leaking valve at the Poplar and Campbell roads intersection, after it has persisted for over six months.

The long-standing leak left the busy circle riddled with potholes, mud, and constant water flow, creating dangerous driving conditions and mounting frustration for motorists and residents alike.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe, who had been actively escalating the issue, confirmed that JW has started the repair work, after months of delays. “Procurement of a new valve has started, but only likely to be delivered on Thursday [September 11]. Water will be restored, and repairs will resume, possibly on Friday.”

During the six months of inaction, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) repaired the road surface multiple times, only for it to deteriorate again as water from the leak weakened the tar. JRA had eventually refused to carry out further repairs until JW dealt with the root cause.

Van der Merwe urged motorists to exercise caution around the circle until full road repairs are completed.
