‘Witkoppen bridge is not safe during rainy weather’ – Sunninghill Ratepayers Association chairperson
The Sunninghill Ratepayers Association chairperson, Linda Gildenhuys, issues a safety warning to residents and motorist to be careful around the Witkoppen bridge as rainy season approaches.
As the rainy season approaches, the Sunninghill Ratepayers Association is urging both motorists and residents to exercise caution, especially regarding the low-lying bridge on Witkoppen Road, which faces annual flooding threats.

The chairperson of the association, Linda Gildenhuys, explains, “Every year, when the rains begin, we see the same issues arise. The bridge has been at risk of flooding for many years, and despite our repeated requests for it to be raised, no action has been taken.”
The situation is exacerbated by heavy rain upstream, which can lead to sudden flooding even when Sunninghill itself hasn’t received much precipitation. “It doesn’t take a lot of rain to create dangerous conditions here. The unpredictability makes it even more urgent for our community to be vigilant,” she added.
During heavy rains, debris, including trees, wash down the river, creating blockages that impede natural water flow. This accumulation significantly heightens the risk of flooding at the bridge.

In preparation for the seasonal downpours, the association is advising residents to consider alternative routes during inclement weather. “We stress the importance of avoiding the bridge when it’s raining, even if it appears that there is just a small amount of water present. Floods can develop quickly and with little warning.”
To mitigate risks during the rainy season, the association collaborates with local security company Savika Special Ops, who are tasked with monitoring the river. As soon as the water begins to rise around the bridge, their team works diligently to close the road and prevent motorists from potentially being swept away.
Gildenhuys explains that while some motorists listen to the warnings, there are always those who choose to ignore them, often responding rudely. Tragically, past incidents have demonstrated that this disregard can lead to devastating consequences, including loss of life.
As the rains begin to fall, motorist and residents are reminded to stay vigilant, prioritise safety, and heed the warnings as the risks of flooding rise once more.
